Five Minute Friday: Remember

On Fridays around these parts we stop, drop, and write.

For fun, for love of the sound of words, for play, for delight, for joy and celebration at the art of communication.

For only five short, bold, beautiful minutes. Unscripted and unedited. We just write without worrying if it’s just right or not.

Won’t you join us?

    1. Write for 5 minutes flat – no editing, no over thinking, no backtracking.
    2. Link back here and invite others to join in.
    3. Most importantly: leave a comment for the person who linked up before you – encouraging them in their writing!

OK, are you ready? Give me your best five minutes on:

It was strange to be unable to move when they pulled you out of me.

Strange not to have been tired and sweaty from the pushing. Instead I was laid out like a plank – these legs of mine numb to the baby girl crying across the room. But my heart. My heart poured out of my eyes and my arms ached with the empty anticipation of meeting you hand to hand, fingers to flesh.

Hungry eyes waited and feasted on that small flailing fist waving at me from the scale a million miles away.

But when your angry face was wrpped up in that cocoon of warm blankets the journey began. They walked you over to me and my world as I knew it bust apart, to meet you my daughter. My tiny made-in-the-image of me woman child.

Flesh of my flesh and heart of my heart they laid you cheek to cheek with me and despite the epidural I danced.

Every iota of me danced to meet you.

{And those of you who were at Relevant last week? It was a highlight, an absolute highlight to do Five Minute Friday live with you all!}

Oh, Lisa-Jo, that was so beautiful. And you gave me yet another perspective from which to view the blessing of my own baby girl’s arrival. Thanks so much. :)

P.S. Your baby girl is BEAUTIFUL.

  3. 3

  5. 5

Beautiful. My son often asks me about that moment he was born and how I felt. You’ve captured the joy so well. :)

  6. 6

I have finally managed to do my first 5Minute Challenge!! And it was challenging!

  7. 7

Thank you for 5minute Friday, Lisa-Jo. I think I discover something about myself every time I write.

    {MISS YOU}

  8. 8

    That was so sweet!

Oh holy night!!! That there is the cutest little nugget E V E R!!! I giggled and cooed when I saw that chunky, beautiful perfect face with the hint of wee crumbs on her chin. Thank you so much for sharing. Awesome post….again =)

I’m pretty sure that you said the only rule for this is that you have to visit the person before you. I hope so, because I didn’t do much with the word remember. Glad you told us about this at Relevant. Have a great weekend!

  11. 11

So beautiful! I can imagine the emotion and feelings at this special moment.
    Eternal memories.

  12. 12

I am sorry, my original message was to tell you that your baby’s picture and your Remember post was beautiful :) I got caught up in the fun of writing that I forgot that I read yours first :)

  13. 13

So beautifully expressed. Full of emotion! I felt like a visitor in the room, watching you dance.

  14. 14

This is great! I just wrote a blog about my twins, (I haven’t blogged it yet because I want to add some photos). It is so fabulous to have such blessed moments and children to treasure!!!

Your baby girl is so beautiful. I just love when you write about being her mama. I can tell God is unfurling expansive things inside of you in that.

This was my favorite FMF yet… Even if I did break the rules and write longer. ;)

  16. 16

Oh, such a beautiful picture! Made me remember that numbness and inability to move, even though I so much wanted to. I joined in this week – first time in a LONG time.I got out of the habit of writing regularly and am easing myself back into it. Five minutes is just enough!

remember when you were born, they took you from me for an hour, then you nursed for the first time – you were so unhappy, and then so was I!

remember when you sat in my arms, looking at me, and your shoulders were bigger than your head, and you just looked and looked at me, and we wrapped you pu again, and that’s the last I remember until I got a headache big enough to rearrange the room because the curtains didn’t cut out the light

remember how we came home and sat and watched you and you nursed and cried and nursed and cried and nursed and cried and it was suddenly 7 and your Dad watned to know when I was going to put dinner together like I suddenly knew how to cook after all these years?

remember looking at me and smirking and then putting your bottom in reverse and walking backwards in our bedroom? you slip slipped your feet on the hardwood floor and just laughed at me as you did it

remember looking at the book and looking at me and looking at the book and looking at me and then giving me back the book and saying read mama read!

and the last two minutes was just pulling my son back to the computer!

  18. 18

I couldn’t link up for some reason…..but you can still get to it. :)

  19. 19

Beautifully written and wonderful prompt! I’ve been reading Coloradolady’s 5 Minute Fridays for a while and today I came to the source and did one myself for the first time! Thank you!

I love the way you got right into the depth of the emotion, the transformational love that occurs right at that moment when the baby arrives. I, too, love epidurals! And modern medicine. All four times my labor stopped when the water broke — I needed a little help. Then, all four times, I had back labor (indescribable pain) – so the epidural was necessary. I’ve done a lot of dancing with my kids since their birthdays, though :) blessings, Alyssa

One of these days I’m going to do this thing for real! Seriously, you’d think doing it in person and reading it aloud in our session would have kicked the fear of the 5-minute Friday! But actually, I think it’s more that I am highly structured and annoyingly Type A — I write my post the night before and then schedule it to post early in the morning. There’s no writing on the fly for me! But really, truly, I will try this some Friday.

This piece is amazing, by the way. Do you get better with practice, do you think? ‘Cause I don’t think I could write something like this unedited and on the fly. Just sayin’.
